Inspiring the Next Generation of Match Officials

This afternoon marked a special milestone for us at RefEd, as we delivered our first ever Mini Match Officials course at Grange Primary School in Preston.

Working with 16 enthusiastic Year 5 students, the session blended creativity, learning, and practical experience. In the classroom, pupils designed their own referee kits, explored the key skills and qualities of match officials, and discussed the vital role referees play in the game. We even tested their knowledge with some Laws of the Game challenges!

Out on the field, the sunshine set the perfect stage for hands-on learning. Each student took charge of a small-sided game—whistle in hand—making decisions, using cards, and building real confidence in their ability to lead. The added fun of flags, cards, and even vanishing spray made it an unforgettable experience.

What stood out most was the growth shown by every single pupil. From start to finish, they demonstrated confidence, leadership, resilience, bravery, and—most importantly—respect for one another.

This is exactly why we do what we do.

A superb afternoon with genuine, high-quality learning on display. The future of officiating is in safe hands.

👏 Well done to all our Mini Match Officials!

School Feedback

The school shared the following feedback after the programme:

“Our children have loved Mini Match Officials! We completed the 6 week package, beginning with a full day session followed by 5 weeks of lunchtime support. Our children have developed their resilience, communication and organisation, growing in confidence each week. It has been brilliant to see the children applying the skills outside of the sessions too!

Natalie and Leigh have been professional throughout and brought real expertise and inspiration for our children.

Mini Match Officials aligns perfectly with our vision for developing leadership and independence in Key Stage 2, and it is something we will certainly be looking to provide annually for our pupils.”
